Police Inspector who killed girlfriend jailed for life

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment after a seven-member jury, by a 5–2 majority verdict, found him guilty of murder.

Inspector Twumasi was convicted for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah — popularly known as Maadwoa — near her residence at Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023. The killing sparked national outrage and renewed public concern over gun violence and professional misconduct within the security services.

Though the police officer initially confessed to the shooting, he claimed it was not intentional. He later pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial before the jury.

After nearly three years of legal proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu delivered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025.

Family members of the late Victoria Dapaah, who packed the courtroom, expressed relief and gratitude over the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, thanked the media for their consistent coverage of the case, describing the judgment as “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.

Background

Twenty-six-year-old Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, on April 20, 2023, at Adum — just a few metres from her residence.

During his first court appearance, Inspector Twumasi admitted to the shooting but claimed he did not intend to kill “his lover.”

Investigations by the prosecution revealed that the incident followed a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt. The police officer had reportedly demanded a refund from the deceased, and when she failed to repay the amount, he allegedly shot her, resulting in her death.
