Returning the Favour: Food Security and Prosperity

Dr. Forson emphasized that this investment is a profound gesture of support for the nation’s farmers, who have historically been the backbone of the economy.

“Mr. Speaker, our farmers have always carried Ghana on their shoulders. With these investments, we are returning the favour, giving them the tools, technology, and support to carry the nation into a future of food security and prosperity.”

The Minister stressed that the government sees agriculture as the key driver of economic revitalisation:

“The transformation has begun. Agriculture is not just an occupation; it is the engine of Ghana’s renewal.”

Addressing Food Gluts with GH₵200 Million

In a separate move to protect farmer income and stabilise food prices, the Minister announced an immediate financial intervention to address recent reports of food oversupply, or “food glut”, across the country.

“Mr. Speaker, in response to the food glut across the country, President Mahama has directed the immediate release of an additional GH¢200 million to the National Food Buffer Stock Company to purchase and store the excess food to protect the investment and income of our cherished food crop and poultry farmers.”

This two-pronged approach—boosting productivity through mechanisation and ensuring market stability through buffer stock purchases—is intended to deliver comprehensive support to the agriculture sector in 2026.
