Stampede at Baba Yara Stadium leaves five injured during military screening

Five young people were injured during a stampede at a military recruitment and screening exercise at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene said on social media on Wednesday (12 November).

In a statement posted on Facebook, the minister said he had directed that the injured receive “the best possible medical care and full support” to ensure a speedy recovery.
The minister expressed regret over the incident and emphasized that future recruitment exercises would be conducted in a “safe, orderly, and humane manner.” He added that thoughts and prayers were with the affected individuals and their families.
The incident follows a similar stampede at a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment event at El Wak Sports Stadium, where six people, died.
President Mahama has ordered the immediate suspension of the exercise and launch an investigation into the incident.
“As I speak to you, top officials in the military have confirmed the deaths. In Kumasi, the same thing happened, and one person is seriously injured,” he said, before calling for a minute’s silence in honour of the victims.
