Kumasi residents jubilate over court’s decision to halt Lumba’s funeral

Some Residents in the Ashanti Regional Capital Kumasi are celebrating after a court stopped the funeral arrangements for highlife icon Daddy Lumba.

They welcome the decision, saying it’ll help the family resolve internal issues and plan a fitting tribute.
The Accra High Court granted an injunction, restraining the funeral head, Kofi Owusu, from proceeding with the burial and barred Transitions Funeral Home from releasing the body.
The court cited concerns over sidelining the immediate family in arrangements, emphasizing due process and family involvement.
The court directed Kofi Owusu to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to agree on a new burial date, affirming his authority to lead preparations in consultation with the family.
The dispute involves Daddy Lumba’s maternal relatives, who argue they hold rightful authority over funeral rites under customary law.
They’ve been at odds with the family head, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, over funeral planning and fund management .
The Asantehene has distanced himself from the controversy, stating the matter falls outside his jurisdiction and emphasizing that funeral arrangements are the responsibility of the Nsutahene and Daddy Lumba’s family
