National Security launches crackdown on drivers charging illegal fares

The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Security Secretariat is launching a special joint security operation on Monday, January 26, 2026, to clamp down on commercial transport operators charging illegal fares in Greater Kumasi.
Led by Regional Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari, the exercise will involve over 100 personnel from the regional office and officers from district security units.
The operation targets commercial drivers, conductors, and loading boys unlawfully increasing transport fares, with those arrested to be handed over to the Ghana Police Service for prosecution.
The 14-hour daily operation will run until there’s a noticeable change in commercial transport operators’ behavior.
To minimize the impact on commuters, National Security and Metro Mass Transit will deploy at least 10 buses to transport passengers from selected communities to Kejetia and other destinations.
Capt. (Rtd.) Jabari emphasized that the exercise aims to instil discipline and ensure respect for the rule of law, not punish transport operators.
“As a transport operator, you have no right to take the law into your own hands by increasing transport fares,” he said.
The operation is part of broader efforts to protect commuters and maintain order in the commercial transport sector in Kumasi.
