Review and regulate anti illegal mining taskforce to curb clashes – GNASSM to government

Clashes involving police and galamseyers notably the recent one which claimed one life and another severely injured has been described by GNASSM as unfortunate and irresponsible.

The incident which occurred at Bepotenten in the Amansie Central District can also be attributed to the unregulating nature of police patrols in mining communities, according to the District Secretary.

Mr Michael Adu Gyamfi decried how police patrols in mining communities has become a great concern to small scale miners in recent time because some of the patrols are meant for personal gains than fighting illegal mining.

He made a shocking revelation on the fact that, three separate police taskforce team visiting a particular mining site in a day for the same purpose.

Separate police patrol teams reportedly from region, division and district police commands take undue advantage of the situation prompting the responding reprisal attacks from the miners.

According to Mr Adu Gyamfi, the numerous complaints and distress calls brought to his attention by victims of this daily ritual especially those in the Amansie enclave compelled the District Chairman Frank Osei and some executives to have several engagements with the Bekwai Regional Police Command but the situation remains unresolved.

Commending the architecture and operations of the National Anti Illegal Mining Operation Secretariat (NAIMOS), he suggested a similar system to be replicated in the regional police administration even if  their operations are still relevant to promote sanity and avert further abuse.
