A/R: RCC directs MMDAs to strengthen levies, revenue collection in mining, quarry areas

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has issued new directives to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to strengthen the regulation of fees, levies, and revenue collection, particularly within mining, quarry, and sand winning communities across the Ashanti Region.
The Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amaakohene during the meeting with major stakeholders and workers from the various assemblies, emphasized the importance of transparency, due process, and strict compliance with laws governing revenue and levy collections.
Speaking at the event on Thursday Dr Frank Amaakohene noted that, Local Government legal framework must be used to protect legitimate businesses while ensuring responsible revenue mobilization.
“We are committed to supporting Assemblies to mobilize revenue lawfully and sustainably for the development of the Ashanti Region,” he said.
The directives include ensuring fee fixing follows approved Local Government guidelines and statutory procedures, submitting existing by-laws on fees and levies for review and validation, and issuing stickers only to legally registered entities.
The RCC also stressed the need for Assemblies to verify business registration certificates, licenses, and permits before registering any equipment or operations, particularly in mining, quarry, and sand winning activities.
These measures aim to promote accountability, eliminate unauthorized charges, and create a fair and predictable business environment .
