ECG, Ghana Water cut services to Komenda Sugar Factory over unpaid bills

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has revealed that the Komenda Sugar Factory has been disconnected from the national grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana and had its water supply cut off by Ghana Water Limited over unpaid utility bills.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 17, the sector minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, explained that although the factory has the potential to contribute significantly to national development, persistent technical and operational challenges have prevented it from running at full capacity.

“The factory has been disconnected from the national grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana and water supply by Ghana Water Company Limited due to unpaid bills. Added to the poor state of the equipment, the facility has accumulated significant debts,” he said.

He further disclosed that the government has engaged a transaction advisor to help secure a strategic investor to revamp and operationalise the factory.

“Given the importance the government attaches to the factory, the Ministry has prioritised the engagement of a transaction advisor to package the factory and secure a strategic investor to operationalise the factory and farms in the 2026 budget,” he added.
