IGP promotes over 12, 000 Police officers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has approved the promotion of 12, 802 Police Officers between January and the first week of February 2026, effectively clearing a backlog of promotions dating back 10 years.
The promotions, covering ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector, were confirmed by the IGP’s Secretariat.
According to the secretariat, the promotions were largely administrative and special recommendations carried out in line with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I 76).
The move comes amid reports alleging nepotism in the recent promotions; however, the Secretariat strongly refuted the claims, asserting that all procedures were followed due process.
“All unit, district, divisional, and regional commanders across the country’s 25 police regions were directed to submit the names of officers due for promotion,” the Secretariat explained.
Of those promoted, approximately 11,900 officers in the lower ranks were elevated by one rank after exceeding the stipulated four-year period in their positions. An additional 600 officers received promotions based on special recommendations.
The Secretariat noted that several petitions had been received from officers citing unfair treatment or delays in promotion. These included officers who had been on interdiction for more than five years but were later acquitted and discharged.
Following reviews, the administration granted them their deserved promotions.
Families of officers who died in the line of duty also petitioned the Service, leading to posthumous promotions for the deceased personnel.
