Sokoban new site residents decry “abandoned” road, link it to rising armed robbery

Residents of Sokoban New Site in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region have staged a protest over the deplorable condition of their main access road, blaming the situation for an upsurge in armed robbery attacks in the area.

According to the residents, the dusty and badly damaged road has left the community virtually cut off, creating a safe haven for criminals who exploit the poor accessibility to carry out attacks.

“The state of this road has made our area vulnerable. Robbers take advantage of the isolation and strike at will,” a worried resident said.

Beyond the security concerns, residents say the deteriorating road is affecting their health and daily lives. They complain of persistent dust, which has led to respiratory infections, severe headaches, and other health complications.

“Are we not part of Ghana? Why should we die because of dust?” one resident asked angrily, expressing frustration over what he described as years of neglect.

Some families, they revealed, have begun relocating due to the unbearable living conditions. One resident lamented that his entire family had to move out because they could no longer endure the dust and insecurity.

The residents further accused the police of failing to respond promptly to distress calls, alleging that officers often cite the poor nature of the road as a reason for their inability to access the community.

They disclosed that contractors abandoned the road project more than six years ago, with no sign of returning to complete the work.

The aggrieved residents are now appealing to the government to urgently rehabilitate the road and deploy a dedicated police patrol team to the area to curb the growing robbery incidents.

“If our concerns are ignored, we will be left with no option but to take drastic action to ensure our voices are heard,” another resident warned.
