Free SHS: Early release of food funds critical to SHS stability – Former Kumasi High headmaster
A former headmaster of Kumasi High School, Mr Bernard Hall-Baidoo, has called on the government to ensure the early release of funds to food suppliers serving secondary schools, warning that delays could disrupt feeding arrangements ahead of the reopening of schools.
He stressed that timely disbursement would enable suppliers to procure adequate foodstuffs in advance and avoid shortages during the academic term.
Mr Hall-Baidoo cautioned that persistent delays in payments to the National Buffer Stock could undermine the effectiveness of the Free SHS policy.
According to him, feeding challenges remain central to the policy’s success, and any disruption could have serious implications for student welfare and the sustainability of the programme.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Nyansapo on Otec FM, hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Mr Hall-Baidoo emphasised that prompt payments would allow suppliers to plan effectively and deliver sufficient quantities of food to schools.
“If the food suppliers receive funds early, they can supply enough food for the senior high schools for the entire term and prevent unnecessary hardship,” he stated.
His remarks come in the wake of concerns raised by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, which has warned that some schools may be forced to shut down if food shortages persist.
The association indicated that several institutions are already grappling with inadequate supplies, raising fears about the well-being of students across the country.
Mr Hall-Baidoo urged swift government intervention to avert a potential crisis, noting that delays in addressing the issue could erode confidence in the policy.
He reiterated that ensuring an uninterrupted food supply is essential to maintaining stability within the education sector and safeguarding the long-term viability of the Free SHS initiative.
