Kumasi cold store operator counts gh₵10,000 loss as ‘Dumsor’ returns

Cold store operators in Kumasi are lamenting huge losses due to the recent spate of intermittent power outages, popularly known as ‘dumsor’.
Speaking to OTEC news , a cold store operator in Kumasi Asafo Market explained that prolonged blackouts over the past week left him without electricity for several hours daily, causing large quantities of fish, chicken, sausage, and other frozen products to thaw and go bad.
“I have lost about GH₵10,000 worth of goods,” he said. “Everything defrosted and I had to throw them away. It’s painful because this is my only source of income.”
He added that customers are also staying away because they fear buying compromised products.
“People don’t trust frozen food now. They think it might have gone bad and been refrozen. So even the little I manage to save, I can’t sell,” he noted.
The operator is appealing to the Electricity Company of Ghana and government to urgently stabilize power supply, warning that many small cold store businesses risk collapse if the outages persist.
“We use electricity for everything. No light means no business. And we still have to pay rent, pay workers, and pay back loans,” he said.
His concerns add to growing complaints from SMEs and households across the country over the impact of ‘dumsor’ on livelihoods and operating costs.
