Carlos Queiroz resigns after Ghana’s World Cup exit, says Black Stars’ success must begin off the pitch

Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has announced his resignation as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars following the team’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling for a renewed focus on strengthening the foundations of Ghanaian football beyond performances on the field.

In a farewell message issued on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Queiroz reflected on his time with the national team, describing the experience as both an honour and a privilege while expressing gratitude to the players, officials and supporters.

“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn, Queiroz said. “I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions.”

The veteran coach stressed that Ghana’s future success cannot depend solely on what happens during matches, insisting that sustainable progress must begin with improving the structures that support the national team.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars’ success must start off the field by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent,” he stated.

Queiroz expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Ghana Football Association for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the four-time African champions.

“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars,” he said.

He also paid tribute to his technical team and the players, commending their commitment and professionalism throughout his tenure.

“To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team, Queiroz noted.

Addressing Ghanaian supporters, the outgoing coach acknowledged the disappointment of the World Cup campaign but maintained that the team had succeeded in restoring the Black Stars’ image on the global stage.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage, he said.

Queiroz concluded his farewell message with optimism, thanking Ghanaians for their support and expressing confidence in the team’s future.

“Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.
