Kumasi CBD faces imminent transport shortage

Kumasi CBD faces imminent transport shortage as drivers abandon city centre over high operational cost
Some commercial transport operators have hinted that the Central Business District of Kumasi will experience a huge shortage of commercial vehicles in the coming weeks if government fails to increase transport fares.
The operators say high operational costs are already forcing drivers to avoid long traffic to pick passengers in Kumasi, especially in the evening.
This, they noted, is causing passengers to be stranded, with many spending long hours before getting transport home after closing from work.
In an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Thursday, some of the transport operators said most of their drivers have now resolved to work on the outskirts of Kumasi to avoid burning fuel in long traffic.
“Now the fear is that, the more the drivers fail to operate in the central business district, the more people get stranded during rush hour,” one operator said.
“The situation also gives room for the few available drivers to charge exorbitant fares with the passenger at the receiving end.”
The drivers are calling on the government, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, and all major stakeholders to quickly agree on a percentage increase to solve the challenge.
They noted they will consider returning to the CBD if government increases transport fares.
