GNACOPS hails Mahama’s decision to post 150,000 students to 168 Private Schools under Free SHS Policy

The National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) has commended President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to include private schools in the free senior high school (SHS) policy.
This move is expected to ease congestion in government schools and improve the quality of education at the secondary level.
According to Obemfo Nana Kwasi Gyetua, Executive Director of GNACOPS, this decision will provide access to education for all.
In an interview on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show Nyansapo, on Tuesday March 18,2025, Gyetua assured that private schools are ready to collaborate with the government to ensure the policy’s success.
“The government has announced plans to post 150,000 students to 168 private schools in the next academic year as part of the free SHS policy”.
He said that a committee is currently working on this, and the government is expected to allocate the numbers for existing schools.
“GNACOPS has already begun engaging with stakeholders, including government officials and members, to put measures in place for a seamless implementation of the policy”, he told the programme’s host Isaac Osei Akoto aka Kanu.
Campaign promise
Gyetua praised President Mahama for honoring his promise to include private schools in the free SHS policy, a move that is expected to strengthen the education sector in Ghana.
He assured the government and the Ghanaian people that they are fully prepared, with adequate infrastructure and experienced staff.
Obenfo Kwesi Gyetua stated that public schools face congestion and other challenges, and that the decision to include private schools in the policy was a step in the right direction.
