A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections to religion and ethnicity.
According to Kwarteng, the party’s flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a Muslim, faced challenges in the party’s strongholds due to his religious background.
Religious factor
Kwasi Kwarteng stated that “most Christians, led by some clergy, who are the majority in the country, campaigned against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, giving his rival, John Mahama, an advantage.
Speaking in an interview on Otec FM’s political show “Dwabrem”, hosted by Doctor Cash on Monday, he believed that it contributed significantly to the party’s defeat.
Dr. Bawumia’s performance
Despite this, Kwasi Kwarteng praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s performance as Vice President, particularly in managing the economy.
He described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a “victim of circumstance,” suggesting that his abilities and achievements were overshadowed by religious and ethnic factors.
Party reflection
Kwasi Kwarteng bemoaned the complexities of Ghanaian politics, where religion and ethnicity can play a significant role in shaping electoral outcomes.
Kwasi Kwarteng then advised that the NPP may need to reflect on these factors as they look to future elections.
