Unpaid nurses and midwives cry out to President Mahama over 8-month salary arrears, threaten abandoning posts

A group of nurses and midwives recruited in 2020 has issued a distress call to President John Dramani Mahama, pleading for the settlement of up to eight months’ worth of unpaid salaries and arrears.

The health professionals, who are part of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, say the prolonged delays have pushed them into financial distress.

At a press conference held at Ejisu on Monday, August 18, 2025, Nana Agyei Sikapa, organizer of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, disclosed that hundreds of health professionals posted across the country have been working without pay for months.

He described the situation as dire, with many unable to meet basic needs.

“Our members are surviving on loans and handouts. Some are starving, yet we are expected to care for the sick. It’s disheartening,” he lamented.

The coalition warned that if the arrears are not cleared soon, many affected workers may be forced to abandon their posts, which could cripple health delivery in parts of the country.

The unpaid nurses and midwives are appealing directly to President Mahama to intervene and ensure the release of funds by the Ministry of Finance to bring immediate relief to their situation.
