Kumasi in sombre mood as residents prepare for Asantehemaa’s One Week Observation

A sombre atmosphere has engulfed Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, as residents prepare to join the one-week observation of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Many shops and businesses have closed down, and trading activities have significantly slowed down in major markets such as Adum, Bantama, Kejetia, and PZ.

The ever-buzzing Central Business District of Kumasi, known for its unabated commercial activities even as early as 4:00 am, was not the same, as most traders, shop owners, and customers alike failed to go to work due to the one-week observation.

A visit by OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng revealed that major trading areas, like Adum, Bantama, Kejetia, PZ, Dr. Mensah, and other satellite markets, recorded low turnouts.

The few who were working were seen clad in all-black attire, indicating that even in their inability to join the event at Manhyia Palace, they are still mourning the late queen.

The one-week observation of the Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III is slated for Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace.

The event, which is hosted by the renowned Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to bring together thousands of mourners from across the world.
