A/R: 32-Year-Old Man Jailed 35 Years for Defrauding Victim  of $50,000

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has confirmed the conviction and sentencing of Abdul Munaf Lawal, a 32-year-old man, to 35 years imprisonment with hard labor for defrauding a victim of $50,000 under false pretenses.

Lawal was arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court 1, presided over by His Honor Mr. Fred Obikyere.

The Fraudulent Act

According to prosecution, Lawal collected $50,000 from a complainant under the pretext of converting the funds into Ghana cedis but failed to return the money and went into hiding.

The incident was reported on July 27, 2023, and following extensive investigations, Lawal was arrested in Accra on June 27, 2025, in connection with a similar offense.

Trial and Sentencing

Lawal initially pleaded not guilty and was remanded into custody during trial.

However, on September 3, 2025, he changed his plea to guilty.

The prosecution revealed that Lawal had a previous criminal record, having served a 24-month prison sentence for theft.

On September 10, 2025, the court convicted Lawal and sentenced him to 35 years imprisonment with hard labor

Police Statement

The Ashanti Regional Police Command stated,in a press release sigh by head of public Affairs DSP Godwin Ahianyo said

“The conviction follows a case reported on 27th July 2023, in which the accused collected an amount of USD 50,000 from the complainant under the pretext of converting it to the Ghana Cedi equivalent.”

 The police command’s efforts have sent a strong message to would-be fraudsters, emphasizing the consequences of engaging in such illicit activities.
