GTEC restores UCC’s accreditation after retirement dispute with VC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has restored the accreditation status of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) after weeks of tension over the retirement of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Johnson Boampong.

The disagreement arose when GTEC directed Prof. Boampong to proceed on retirement, citing that he had exceeded the mandatory retirement age. The university, however, maintained that his continued stay in office was consistent with its internal statutes and governance framework.

As the dispute escalated, GTEC delisted UCC from its portal of accredited tertiary institutions and blocked government subventions meant for the university.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Affairs on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the Commission announced that it had rescinded the sanctions following evidence presented by the UCC Registrar, as well as Prof. Boampong’s decision to contest the matter in court.

“Following the evidence provided by the Registrar of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), complying with the directive issued by GTEC on September 19, 2025, as well as Prof. Johnson Boampong taking up the case in court, GTEC, with immediate effect, restores all services that were earlier withdrawn to UCC,” the statement said.

The Commission further confirmed that UCC has been reinstated on its website as a fully accredited institution.

This development brings temporary relief to students, staff, and other stakeholders of UCC, who had expressed concerns over the implications of the standoff on the university’s operations and reputation.
