Nkoko Nketenkete Launch: Ghana produces mere 4.6% of poultry needs, Agric Minister reveals

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon Eric Opoku, has disclosed that Ghana produces only 4.6 percent of its poultry products, with the country relying heavily on imports to meet demand.

According to him, out of the total 324,000 tons of poultry consumed in Ghana, only 15,000 tons are produced locally, representing a meager 4.6 percent.

He made this revelation during the launch of the government’s flagship program Nkokon Nketenkete in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

“Ghana spends about 300 to 400 million dollars on poultry food importation every year due to the failure of local producers to meet demand,” Opoku said.

“With this program, we are expecting to bridge the gap.”

The Minister revealed that, as part of the policy, the government will give out one-month-old chickens to individual and group poultry farmers to begin their backyard poultry farming.

“Backyard poultry is a major tool for poverty eradication and women improvement, and with this, the government seeks to empower the participants,” Opoku added.

The government has also taken the addresses of all participants and will closely monitor their development, providing necessary support to ensure the success of the program.
