Effiduase-Asokore MP calls for automatic enlistment for victims of GAF recruitment stampede

The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has appealed to the Ministry of Defence to consider compensating victims of the recent Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium through automatic enlistment into the military.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Dr Ayew Afriyie described the incident as deeply tragic and urged the government to take a compassionate approach in addressing the pain and loss suffered by the affected families.
“There is nothing you can do that would completely appease them,” he said, “but there is a way to give the families a sense of belonging and show that the government stands with them.”
A stampede at the El Wak Stadium on Wednesday morning, where the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) was recruiting soldiers, led to the death of six people with several others injured, the GAF has confirmed.
The injured persons are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, and some are in critical condition.
Hon Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie proposed that the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede should be given replacement opportunities, allowing one member from each affected household to be enlisted in their stead.
For those who sustained injuries, the legislator suggested they should be given first priority for enlistment if their health conditions permit them to undergo military training.
“If not fit,” he added, “then their families must replace them,” Dr Ayew Afriyie stated.
Dr Afriyie emphasized that such a gesture would not only serve as a humane form of compensation but also restore public confidence in the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
He argued that while monetary compensation may not suffice, offering opportunities for enlistment would be a lasting way to honor the victims and support their families.
