Ashanti Region: Wawase residents demand fulfillment of campaign promises, threaten action

Residents of Wawase, a farming community near Dominase in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have warned the Mahama-led government to live up to its campaign promises or face their displeasure.

They say no visible development has reached the community since the new administration assumed office in January 2025, leaving them with poor roads, weak telecommunications access, and inadequate social amenities.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the residents expressed frustration over the absence of a CHPS compound, which they say continues to endanger their health.

“When our children or pregnant women fall sick, we have to carry them on motorbikes or walk long distances to seek care,” a resident lamented. They said the lack of healthcare infrastructure is a ticking time bomb for their community.

Residents further disclosed that they walk nine miles to Dominase to sell their farm produce on market days due to the deplorable road network.

Their children in Junior High School also trek the same distance to access education.

“How can our children compete with others in well-developed communities when they exhaust themselves before reaching school?” one parent quizzed.

The Unit Committee Chairman for Wawase Electoral Area, Mr Osei Bonsu, popularly known as Agyasei, led the news conference, accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress of neglecting them.

He said the community’s isolation from national development has denied them access to critical information and opportunities.

“We feel cut off from the world. No network, no roads, and no health facility. We were promised better, but all we see are empty words,” he stated.

The chief farmer of Wawase, Mr John Ayaaba, noted that the only classroom block serving the community was put up by residents through self-help, and even that is inadequate.

He called for teachers’ bungalows and a health facility and urged the government to place Wawase on its development map.

“We are not asking for too much, just basic amenities to live and develop our community,” he appealed.
