SONA 2026: Health funding up from GH₵23.3bn to GH₵34.7bn – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced an increase in Ghana’s health sector financing, disclosing that total health funding has risen sharply to GH₵34.7 billion, compared to the GH₵23.3 billion recorded in 2023.

The President made the disclosure while delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, where he outlined his administration’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and reduce reliance on external funding sources.

President Mahama emphasised that the increase reflects a deliberate policy shift toward greater domestic investment in healthcare.

He noted that the government’s direct contribution to health spending has expanded considerably, signaling a stronger commitment to ensuring sustainable and sovereign health financing.

“In 2026, direct government funding for health will account for about 72% of our total health spending. This is up from 56.8% in 2023. Core health allocations have risen to GH₵23.3 billion and with National Health Insurance resources included, total health financing now stands at GH₵34.7 billion.

“This reflects our clear commitment to domestic financing and health sovereignty.”
