International Women’s Day: Women in Ashanti Region struggle with soaring electricity bills and unemployment

As the world marks International Women’s Day, women in Ghana’s Ashanti Region are speaking out about the crippling challenges they’re facing.
Speaking to OTEC News, they highlighted soaring electricity bills, exorbitant hostel fees, and graduate unemployment as major pain points.
“Things have been very difficult for us in recent years, light bills are going up, pushing us to a very tight corner,” one woman lamented.
Another added, “One painful thing is that, after paying huge hostel fees, school fees, our wards will complete university and will still be home without jobs, this is really affecting our livelihoods.”
The women voiced their frustrations, urging leaders to take action.
They’re calling on political actors and policymakers to implement measures supporting women in Ghana.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Balance the Scales,” emphasizing the need for fair and accessible justice for women and girls.
As the global community rallishes for equal rights, these women are demanding change.
