Police bust Kumasi drug ring, arrest notorious peddler “Con Papa” in major narcotics raid

The Ghana Police Service has arrested several suspected drug peddlers and recovered large quantities of suspected narcotic substances during intelligence-led operations across the Kumasi Metropolis.

According to a press release signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Ashanti Region, the operations were carried out by the Inspector-General of Police Special Operations Team, SOT, in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

One of the major operations at Asawase led to the arrest of 61-year-old Kwame Afriyie, alias “Con Papa”, also known as “American Man”, described as a notorious drug peddler.

A search of his room and provision shop yielded thirty-three and forty-eight parcels respectively of compressed substances suspected to be cannabis.

A subsequent raid at Asafo resulted in the arrest of Kofi Acheampong, alias “Mokobiley”. Police recovered 311 transparent rubber sachets of dried leaves suspected to be narcotics, 13 compressed parcels, 10 wraps of rock-like substances suspected to be cocaine, and quantities of restricted pharmaceutical products.

At Krofrom, National Service personnel Michael Owusu Agyeman, 22, was also arrested with 15 bottles of fruit juice suspected to have been laced with cannabis.

DSP Ahianyo said on Thursday all exhibits have been secured for forensic examination while investigations continue.

“All suspects have since been arraigned before court and remanded into Police custody to reappear on later dates. The Ghana Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to combating the trafficking, peddling and abuse of narcotic drugs,” he stated.

The Command commended the SOT for its professionalism and urged the public to provide credible information on drug-related activities.
