KMA-approved store project on school land leaves deep excavation endangering pupil’s lives

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, has authorized the construction of commercial stores on part of the land belonging to Yaa Achiaa M/A Basic School at Bompata, near Roman Hill.
The project has left a deep excavation that is now threatening the safety of pupils.

An OTEC News visit to the school on Thursday by Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng revealed that portions of the school compound with deep excavation have been left open.
Kindergarten pupils currently have unguarded access to a deep hole left on site by the contractor.

The Public Relations Officer for KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, confirmed to OTEC News that the Assembly is fully aware of the ongoing construction.
“This is a Public-Private Partnership between KMA and a private developer,” Madam Aboagye stated.

“Both parties agreed that students must be protected, so we will ensure the right thing is done.”
She added that KMA has already directed the contractor to hoard the entire area to protect the children.
“The Assembly will deploy our engineers there to once again ensure the place is totally cordoned off from the school,” she said.
According to the KMA PRO, the development forms part of efforts by the Assembly to remove unauthorized structures and replace them with a befitting commercial facility.
Meanwhile, parents and school authorities are calling for urgent action to secure the site before any tragedy occurs.
