Catholic Bishops to MPs: Seek interest of Ghana first

The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev Philip Naameh, has called on parliamentarians to first seek the national interest on the floor ahead of any other interests.

Citing the rancour that has greeted the 2022 Budget Statement in the House, Most Rev Naameh said it could have been avoided if lawmakers had allowed their love for the country to override their parochial interest.

Speaking at the 2021 festival of nine lessons and carols at the forecourt of Parliament on Wednesday, he advised “both sides of the House to always put the interest of Ghanaians over and above the individual and parochial interests.”

“We encourage stakeholder engagement on important national issues so that in implementing policies and programmes, the government can carry all Ghanaians along,” he added at the event hosted by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

“Everything that you are doing here is watched and perceived by the youth, who see you as role models because of your achievements, they would also want to see that you maintain a certain level of discipline which can be emulated by them,” Most Rev Naameh said.

Meanwhile, the House has already begun adopting reports from the various committees on the budget estimates of the various ministries ahead of the passage of the appropriations bill before rising for the holidays.
