I’m Vice President now; ‘clueless’ Mahama must take my criticism – Bawumia

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has charged ex-president John Mahama to accept reproach from him as he is now the second-in-command.

“I hope that in all humility former President Mahama can now accept criticism from me since by the Grace of God I have now occupied the office of Vice-President of the Republic,” Dr Bawumia said in a statement on Monday, 6 November in reaction to an allegation by Mr Mahama on Sunday, 5 November that the Vice-President brought embarrassment to President Nana Akufo-Addo by having an already-existing digital addressing system developed for $2.5million by local IT firm Vokacom when same could have been freely gotten from Google on mobile phones.

Mr Mahama in 2015 said Dr Bawumia and the Nana Akufo-Addo, then-running mate and then-flagbearer of the NPP, respectively, had no right to criticise him [as president] since they had never acceded to that high office.

Mr Mahama said at the time: “They [NPP] have told all their communicators anytime you mention Mahama or NDC say incompetent. I hear Bawumia and co say incompetent Mahama administration. You never held any responsibility anywhere near presidency before. You do not know what it is like to be President. I will take that word from Kufuor or Rawlings because they have been there before. All of you guys have never ever come near the presidency and you stand there and say incompetent Mahama administration… What do you know about competence?”

It was in response to Dr Bawumia’s criticism of the budget presented to parliament by then-Finance Minister Seth Terkper at the time.

Dr Bawumia’s latest response to Mr Mahama was occasioned by Mr Mahama’s accusations of the current government concerning the national digital addressing system which he described as a “419” scam.
