Private School Heads Cry Over Exclusion from Free SHS

The Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools (CHOPSS), is demanding the immediate inclusion of their schools in the Free SHS policy to save their schools from collapse.

”It cannot happen that His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will go down in history as the president during whose tenure all private Senior High Schools collapsed, our president would not do that”

President of the association, Mr I.K. Mensah called on government and the relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency put in place measure that would ensure their inclusion in the newly implemented Free SHS policy to save private senior high schools in the country.

”Almost every country I have travelled in the world has private schools which are supported by government to operate,” he said.

According to him, if government did not exempt private health facilities from the National health insurance scheme, it would be wrong to exempt private schools from the free SHS policy when the schools meet all requirements as far as logistics and infrastructure are concerned.

Government knows we were equipped and capable of admitting students that is why they posted SHS students to the various private schools in the country, so we are wondering why government will forget us when implementing such a laudable policy,” he stated.

He explained that a lot of private senior high schools have the best facilities which most government schools do not even have, adding that, ”we have the manpower, human resource, our teachers are well trained and I acquired a loan to build a school, so what is wrong if government posted 1000 students to my facility with the same funds given to the government schools”

Mr Mensah revealed that there are about 280 private senior high schools in the country, currently employing over 10,000 teaching and non teaching staff, and as such cannot be left to collapse because it would be increasing the number of unemployed graduates in the country.
