NDC Shooting: 3 ‘Hawks’ denied bail by Kumasi Court

The Asokwa District Court has remanded three members of the ‘The Hawks’ who were arrested in connection with the shooting incident that occurred at the Ashanti Regional office of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which claimed one life and injured another.

The three who belong to the pro-NDC militia are to re-appear in court on 14 March 2019.

Dauda Ibrahim alias Wayo, 40; Agyin Samuel alias Rock, 32 and Abdul Ganiyu alias Petit 37, were charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The lawyer for the accused persons, Evans Amankwah, prayed the court to admit them to bail since they turned themselves in after they were declared wanted.

He said Dauda Ibrahim is a Second Deputy Youth Organiser of the NDC at Old Tafo Constituency and also a member of the Ashanti Regional NDC security committee representing ‘The Hawks’.

He said Dauda was invited by the regional chairman of the NDC, Augustus Andrews, to come with his colleague members of ‘The Hawks’ to the meeting held at the NDC regional office.

He said Agyin Samuel was not around when the shooting incident happened whilst Abdul Ganiyu did not come to the NDC regional office at all on the day of the incident.

Mr Amankwah said his clients had shown good faith by voluntarily reporting themselves to the police which is an indication that they will avail themselves to the court when granted bail.

But the prosecutor, ACP Okyere Darko, argued that granting the accused persons bail will interfere with police investigations.

He said counsel for the accused persons’ argument that his clients turned themselves in was not an accurate representation of what had happened.

He said the accused persons consulted some leaders of the NDC and those leaders brought the individuals to the police.

ACP Darko said the police is still searching for Bari Mohammed aka ‘warrior’, who pulled the trigger, and other suspects who were actively involved in the conspiracy, therefore, admitting the three to bail will frustrate the police.

The court, presided over by His Worship Abass Mohammed, subsequently, denied the accused persons bail and remanded them to police custody on the grounds of their own safety since they are deemed to be involved in the incident.

The prosecutor demanded for a bench warrant for some three other persons who he said were actively involved in the shooting incident but the court denied on the grounds that they have not been charged.

They are Saani Mohammed aka ‘Commando’, Bari Mohammed aka ‘warrior’ and Suleman aka ‘Akon’.

All the accused persons were in court on Monday, 4 March 2019 amidst tight security.

Observers were thoroughly searched before entering the courtroom.

The family of the deceased were also in court and clashed with some persons who had come to support the accused persons.

Police had to intervene to maintain peace and orderliness at the court premises.

Some family members of the deceased, Abdul Wasiu Iddrisu, who spoke to Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah called for justice.
