Bantama gang rape suspects weep in court

The three juvenile suspects wept uncontrollably today in Asokwa district court in Kumasi as they made the second appearance for allegedly gang-raping a girl in a video that has gone viral on social media when they remanded into police custody.

They will reappear before the court presided over by His Worship Mr Peter Oppong Boahen on December 27, 2017.

The case was heard in camera because they are underaged.

Speaking to OTECNEWS’ Isaac Nsiah Foster, the counsel for the suspects, Lawyer John Boamah, appealed to the media to be circumspect in their reportage so as not to prejudice the outcome whiles the prosecution are still searching for more evidence.

The gang rape video has sparked massive outrage in the country with the majority of Ghanaians calling on the police to ensure that the boys are prosecuted.

The about five minutes video shows an underage girl pinned to a mattress by one of her abusers while his accomplices take turns in an attempt to perform sexual acts on her.

The victim who was resisting her attackers all-through the ordeal was restrained from escaping by her abusers who appeared to be having fun with the torture.

The victim is at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) receiving psychological help.

Various civil society groups have already condemned the incident and called on the police to take immediate action against the suspects.

The three suspects arrested over the recent gang-rape video that has gone viral, are Junior High School and Senior High School students.

This is according to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, which has vowed to pursue the matter and ensure justice is served.

The Police is however not ready to reveal the ages of the teenagers.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Juliana Obeng, told the media that the police had identified 4 accomplices who are currently at large.
