Kumasi floodings: Grandma, grandson died at Nhyiaeso
Two people are known to have died at Nhyiaeso, near Kwadaso Estate in the Ashanti Region following heavy rains Thursday night.
Seventy-four-year-old Adwoa Brempomaa and her 8-year-old grandson, Chris Adu Sarkodie were crushed by collapsing walls of their room at about 10: 30 p.m.
Son of the deceased woman is Alex Adu told OTEC News his efforts and that of Fire Service and Police personnel, could not save the two.
Kwabena Nsenkyere, the Ashanti Regional Director for the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) said they have no materials for the displaced residents.
According to him, the floods in the area occurred due to activities of the residents.
More than two hundred houses on Thursday May 10, 2018 were submerged after nearly six hours of heavy rainstorm. It comes after city authorities rolled out steps to address perennial flooding ahead of onset of the rains.
The plan seems have yielded little results since areas they tackled in the plan were flooded.
The affected areas included Ahwia-Overseas, Madam Mork area in Santasi, Parakou Estate, Kwadaso Estate, Nshaiyeso, South Suntreso junction, near the Bekwai roundabout, Ashtown, C.P.C, Moshie Zongo junction and Airport roundabout.
Speaking on OTECFM’S Breakfast Show ‘Nyansapo’ Hon. Kwabena Senkyire, who visited the affected the affected areas and the victims, said efforts are been made by his outfit to secure some relief items and shelter for them.
He hinted of a demolition exercise to forestall the recurrence of such man-made disasters.
“This is no natural disaster but man-made. We have to pull down certain structures to allow water find its way. We shouldn’t experience man-made disaster of this nature anymore. We urge all those who have build on water ways to get ready to move,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the KMA has been assessing the extent of damage.
Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, says efforts by the assembly must be complemented by residents.
“We as managers of Kumasi have taken the bull by the horn.. If you have realized our efforts, that is dredging of the waterways have helped reduce the flooding,” he said.
