Otumfuo@25: Asante culture shines at grand Akwasidae celebration (Pictures)

Authentic African culture was proudly displayed at the Manhyia Palac  in Kumasi on Sunday (12 May) during the celebration of Akwasidae, a significant cleansing festival of the Asantes.

This year’s festival marked the 74th birthday of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the 25th anniversary of his enstoolment on the Golden Stool.

The event was graced by the special guest of honour, Prime Minister Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago, along with a high-powered delegation from the government, diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, clergy, lawmakers, and other dignitaries.

Thousands of people from diverse backgrounds gathered at Manhyia to pay homage to the Asante monarch, who had conducted morning rituals before sitting in state for the occasion.

The festival reached its climax when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II arrived at the durbar ground, adorned in resplendent traditional attire and carried in a palanquin amidst the rhythmic beats of Fontomfrom and Kete drums, and the melodic tunes of horns and flutes.

The iconic Golden Stool was also displayed for public viewing.

Nwomkro songs praising the enduring resilience of the Ashanti Kingdom echoed through the air.

Before taking his seat to receive homage, the Asantehene greeted the assembled crowd, and traditional priests captivated the audience with spiritual displays, adding to the rich tapestry of the Akwasidae celebration.
