Police release mentally challenged man who smashed the head of a two-year-old girl at Agona Duakwa

The mentally challenged man who smashed the head of a two-year-old girl at Agona Duakwa in the Agona East district in the Central region has been released by the police after his arrest.

His release, according to the Otec News report, is due to his relationship with a head of the family (abusuapanin) in the community.

The toddler, who is the daughter of Abigal Bonko, was first sent to Agona Duakwa Salvation Army Hospital, referred to Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, and later to Korle-bu due to the severity of the injuries.

The mentally challenged man, last week Sunday evening, met the little girl in front of her house, got hold of her, and smashed her head on the ground several times without any provocation, according to reports.

The reports said the man had been terrorizing the residents, and in one instance, he mercilessly beat an old woman on the farm, and when the residents reacted, they were arrested by the police.

“He is the junior brother of the abusuapanin in the community, and any attempt to retaliate after terrorizing resident results into police persecution due to the influence of the brother,” a resident told Otec News.

“Pleas by the residents to the mentally challenged man’s family to keep him away from the community to release them from their fears have been proven futile,” another resident added.

The residents have thus decided to equally retaliate if he dares attack any resident, regardless of the consequences that befall them, saying “we have run out of patience”.
