Election 2024: Kumasi Religious Leaders take to the streets to back EC’s work (Photos)
A group of religious leaders, comprising dozens of pastors and Muslim leaders took to the streets of Kumasi on October 1, 2024, to demonstrate their support for the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).
The peaceful march, organized by the Coalition of Religious Clergymen, aimed to promote peace and unity ahead of the 2024 polls.
The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam Sheikh Abdul Haruna Mumin urged the public to protect the EC from undue intimidation and harassment, emphasizing the importance of allowing the commission to work as mandated by the constitution.
The clergy expressed concern that unwarranted attacks and intimidation by some political groups are undermining the EC’s credibility and jeopardizing the peace and development of Ghana’s democracy.
The EC, established by the Electoral Commission Act (Act 451) of 1993, is responsible for managing public elections and referendums.
As an independent body, it operates under Article 46 of the 1992 constitution, ensuring impartiality and fairness in electoral processes.
The religious leaders’ march serves as a reminder of the EC’s crucial role in Ghana’s democratic process.
By advocating for the commission’s independence and protection, they hope to promote a peaceful and credible electoral environment.
