National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama has responded to the continuing debate in Parliament over Speaker Alban Bagbin’s announcement of four open seats.
John Mahama told the clerics in Kumasi in the Great Hall of KNUST on Monday, November 11, that the current state of the impasse cannot be resolved through the judicial system.
He contends that a political resolution between the two issues is more important than a Supreme Court decision since Parliament may decide not to follow the court’s decision because it is not within its purview.
“I think that it is something we can solve politically, the solution is not legal because the Supreme Court can give a ruling and Parliament can decide not to obey because they are not under the Judiciary.
“So this requires a political solution,” John Mahama stated.
The former president emphasized the necessity of President Akufo-Addo’s intervention, saying that he would have called for the House’s leadership, along with clergy and the council of state, to reach a peaceful resolution to the deadlock.
“If I were the president, I would demand that the Supreme Court drop the case and call for the two causes’ leaders, the council of state, the speaker, and a few religious organizations to come together and find a solution,” he continued.
