The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concerns over the delay in announcing the results of the December 7 election, warning that it is undermining the nation’s peace and stability and fueling tensions among its youth and supporters.
At a press conference held at the NDC’s headquarters, the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, stressed the urgency of the matter, calling on the Electoral Commission (EC) and relevant stakeholders to expedite the declaration of the results.
Asiedu Nketia revealed that the Peace Council had reached out to the party, urging them to appeal to their youth for calm amid growing frustrations.
While acknowledging the importance of maintaining peace, he argued that calming tensions without addressing the underlying issue of the delayed results would be insufficient.
“The root cause of the agitation is the delay in the declaration of results,” he noted. “We urge the Electoral Commission to act swiftly to restore confidence and calm in the nation.”
The NDC’s comments come amid heightened anxieties across the country as Ghanaians await the official announcement of the presidential and parliamentary results.
“I have been called upon by the National Peace Council to speak to the youth of my party to remain calm and I have responded that I have done that four years ago, and they were cheated and nothing happened, and so the only way I can call on the youth of this country to remain calm is when justice has been delivered.
“And so the way forward is for the Peace Council to call on the EC to expedite the declaration of the results. You don’t need to declare all the constituency results before you can declare the winner of the presidential poll.”
