The Ashanti Regional Secretary for the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Alhaji Abdul Salam Issah has urged government to rechannel resources meant for the Free first year tertiary academic user fees to other sectors within the educational cycle.
President John Mahama, during his campaign for the 2024 elections promised to introduce a free academic user fees for all first year tertiary students.
Speaking on Dwabrem, Kumasi based radio station Otec fm’s afternoon political talkshow hosted by Prince Nii Ade (Dok Cash), Alhaji Salam stated that already a mistake has been made by the Nana Addo-Bawumia led NPP government with the introduction of the Free SHS policy due to the difficulties it is facing especially with feeding therefore similar should not be done at the tertiary level.
According to him, pupils at the primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) are the most vulnerable and therefore freebies in the education sector should be channelled there.
The outspoken CPP executive wondered how the free tertiary academic user fees would be funded as it is an open secret that the country is currently in financial crisis.
“Dr. Cash, let me ask government this, what happens if you pay the fees of first years and they do not get the money to pay for the following year” he quizzed.
