38 Ghanaians, 11 Malians arrested in major drug bust across Kumasi

The Ghana Police Service has recorded another major breakthrough in the fight against illicit drug trafficking in the Ashanti Region.

Through the Inspector-General of Police Special Operations Team, SOT, police conducted intelligence-led operations in several Kumasi suburbs identified as hotspots for narcotic trade.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command in a press release signed by Head of Public Affairs, Suprentendent Godwin Ahianyo said operations form part of the Service’s efforts to combat drug trafficking, disrupt criminal networks, and strengthen public confidence in policing.

The release on Wednesday said swoop targeted crime-prone communities including Atwima-Koforidua, Abuakwa, Sofo Line Lorry Station, Ash Town, Ahwia, Bantama, Aputuogya, Krofrom, Pankrono, Tafo, Twumduase, Krofrom-Colombia and Alarba.

A total of Fifty-Four suspects were arrested, comprising Forty-Nine males and Five females. Of the males, Eleven are Malian nationals and Thirty-Eight are Ghanaians. All were picked up in connection with various alleged drug-related offences.

During the operations, police retrieved large quantities of suspected narcotics and related items.

These include 608 tablets of Tramadol in different strengths, 58 boxes of 225mg Tramadol, 268 sealed packages of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, and 13 bottles of fruit juice branded FEMUDE suspected to contain narcotic substances.

Other exhibits recovered were processing materials, scissors, assorted foreign cigarettes, 23 mobile phones, 2 casino jackpot machines and 4 unregistered motorcycles.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, all 54 suspects and the recovered exhibits remain in police custody assisting with investigations and will be put before court upon completion. 

“The Ghana Police Service assures the public that intelligence-led operations targeting criminal activities, particularly illicit drug trafficking and related offences, will continue across the country,” the Service stated.

The Service has also expressed appreciation to members of the public for their support and is urging anyone with credible information to come forward to help maintain peace and security in their communities.
