Explainer: Why and how Ejurahene, Mamponghemaa break news of Mamponghene’s passing to Asantehene

A delegation from the Asante Mampong Traditional Council, led by Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II and Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakomaa Difie II, has officially informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the passing of the Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.


This was in accordance with Asante’s traditions and customs.

Following the official announcement, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has tasked Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II, who doubles as the Adontenhene of the Asante Mampong Traditional Council and son of the deceased chief, and the Asante Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakomaa Difie, to oversee all arrangements surrounding the unfortunate incident.

The visit to the Manhyia Palace on Monday, April 28, 2025, has paved the way for the traditional council to officially inform the public about the demise of the Occupant of the Silver Stool.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, known in private life as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, was born on December 31, 1939.

He was a lawyer and an economist by profession and previously served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Until his death, he served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs and was the esteemed occupant of the Silver Stool, a position of immense traditional significance in the Asante Kingdom.
