Road crash deaths to hit record high in Ghana if… NRSA warns

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has warned that road crash deaths in Ghana could hit a record 3,000 if precautionary measures are not put in place.

According to the NRSA, the first quarter of 2025 has seen a significant increase in road traffic crashes and fatalities, with 752 people losing their lives compared to 609 in the same period in 2024, representing a 23.5% rise.

Alarming Statistics

The NRSA also reported 4,384 injuries in the first quarter of 2025, up from 3,823 in 2024, marking a 12.1% increase.

The Public Relations Officer of NRSA, Pearl Adusu Sateckla, gave the warning in an interview on Otec FM’ morning show “Nyansapo”, hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng on Thursday April 24,2025.

“These alarming statistics have prompted the NRSA to call for prompt action to address the situation,” she posited.

Factors Contributing to Road Fatalities

Pearl Adusu Sateckla attributed the rise in road fatalities to several factors, including the poor condition of roads and motor vehicles.

She further said human attitudes, such as reckless behavior by passengers, pedestrians, and drivers, also contributed to the rise.

Call to Action

Pearl Adusu Sateckla emphasized the need for intensive road safety education among the public and urged law enforcement agencies to take decisive action to enforce traffic regulations.

“Road crash deaths in Ghana would reach a record 3,000 if a collaborative effort to address the growing road safety crisis in Ghana is not made,” she appealed.

Preventing Road Crashes

Pearl Adusu Sateckla stated that preventing road crashes requires a multifaceted approach that involves both the government and the public.

“By working together, Ghana can reduce the number of road crashes and fatalities, ensuring safer roads for all users, she opined.
