Methodist Church breaks silence on viral video of member labelling bishop as ‘thief’, offers forgiveness and compassion

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Reverend Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has responded to a viral video involving a church member who labelled a bishop a “thief,” emphasizing forgiveness, compassion, and spiritual reflection.

In a statement shared on the church’s official X platform (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Church referenced scripture to frame its response, quoting Jesus in John 9:39: “I came into this world for judgement, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.”

According to the statement, the incident widely circulated on social media was not recent, describing it as “an old story” rather than a current development.

The Church revealed that it had already engaged the situation through appropriate channels, extending “love and compassion” to the member involved, who was seen in a heated exchange with a minister over tithing.

The Presiding Bishop commended the minister for showing restraint, noting, “We thank God for the maturity demonstrated by the minister in not continuing the exchanges.” He also acknowledged the remorse expressed by the member, adding, “We are grateful to the member for her apology.”

Highlighting the emotional toll of the public backlash, the Church expressed concern for the individual at the center of the controversy. “She is hurting by the public attacks. Mama, our love for you is unconditional,”the statement said, reinforcing the Church’s commitment to care and reconciliation.

The message concluded with a reminder of the Christian foundation of forgiveness: “It is the gracious forgiveness of Jesus that keeps us all. Blessings.”

The response from the Methodist Church underscores its broader commitment to unity, grace, and conflict resolution, even amid public scrutiny—offering a measured and faith-centered approach to an incident that has drawn significant online attention.
