Otumfuo promises return visit as Gonja, Asante deepen royal relations

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced plans to pay a reciprocal visit to the Gonja Kingdom after hosting the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, in a landmark meeting aimed at strengthening ties between two of Ghana’s most influential traditional kingdoms.

The Yagbonwura, accompanied by a delegation of more than 100 chiefs, queen mothers, government officials and elders, paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at Manhyia Palace on Wednesday (1 July).

During the visit, the Gonja ruler presented the Asantehene with traditional gifts, including a rare elephant tusk, handwoven textiles, drinks and kola nuts, describing them as symbols of the enduring friendship between the two kingdoms.

In a speech delivered on his behalf, the Yagbonwura traced more than 300 years of historical relations between the Gonja and Asante kingdoms, saying trade, diplomacy and Islamic scholarship had forged enduring bonds despite periods of conflict in the past.

He praised the Asantehene’s role in promoting peace and mediation in Ghana and proposed closer collaboration between the two traditional authorities on resolving land disputes and improving land administration.

The Gonja ruler also called for the codification of customary succession rules, family lineages and traditional leadership structures to reduce succession disputes and strengthen the institution of chieftaincy.

Responding on behalf of the Asantehene, the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, thanked the Yagbonwura for the visit and announced that the Asantehene would undertake a reciprocal visit to the Gonja Kingdom.

“Our history affirms our brotherhood,” he said. “This will not end here. We will repay this visit with a reciprocal one.”

The Asantehene also reaffirmed his commitment to promoting peace, unity and national development through collaboration among Ghana’s traditional authorities.
