Pro-Bawumia camp wins 92% of NPP Ashanti Constituency Executive Positions

The camp of former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emerged as the dominant force in the party’s constituency executive elections in the Ashanti Region, securing an estimated 92 percent of the newly elected executives.

The elections, conducted across the region on Saturday and Sunday, saw candidates identified with Dr. Bawumia record decisive victories in most constituencies, further consolidating his influence within the NPP’s traditional political stronghold.

The results indicate that aspirants who publicly supported Dr. Bawumia during the party’s presidential primaries won the majority of executive positions, reinforcing his grassroots support as the NPP prepares to reorganise ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Even in constituencies where a candidate perceived to be aligned with Dr. Bawumia was defeated, the winning candidate was also regarded as a supporter of the former Vice President, ensuring that the constituency remained within the Bawumia camp.

Several constituencies recorded clean sweeps by pro-Bawumia candidates, with all available executive positions going to his supporters. In areas where the sweep was less comprehensive, candidates aligned with him still secured at least 70 percent of the executive slots.

Only about eight percent of the newly elected executives were reportedly individuals who had previously campaigned for Kennedy Agyapong or Bryan Acheampong during the party’s presidential primary contest.

Although some of these executives have since declared their support for Dr. Bawumia, party insiders argue that their political history and previous campaign activities suggest they were originally aligned with other presidential hopefuls.

The outcome of the constituency elections is widely seen as a significant boost for Dr. Bawumia’s political standing in the Ashanti Region and is expected to strengthen his influence over the party’s grassroots structures as the NPP rebuilds following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
