The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has increased its awareness creation around the spread of prostate and liver cancers.
To commemorate World Cancer Day, the GHS highlighted prostate and liver cancers which predominantly affects males, and is a leading cause of death in Ghana.
Speaking at the World Cancer Day Celebration on Tuesday, February 4, GHS’s Director-General, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea appealed to the media and partners to collaborate in creating awareness and promote vaccination for hepatitis A and B which is key in cancer prevention.
Dr. Kaba Akoriyea further stressed the need for investment in cancer research.
“This year, Ghana Health Service is shining the light on cancers which occur in males, prostate and liver. Although these cancers are among the leading causes of death in Ghana, they are unfortunately not highlighted enough.
“We want to make a special appeal to our friends in the media, as well as our partners to support us to create awareness and synthesise the country on healthy diet, physical activity and vaccination for Hepatitis A and B, which are proven effective means of preventing cancer.
“Beyond this, we urgently need to invest in cancer research to improve care and advocacy for prevention. We shall work hard towards a national cancer registry.”
