Ashanti Region road crashes claim 194 lives in first quarter of 2025

At least 194 people have died in road crashes in the Ashanti Region between January and March 2025, marking a sharp rise from the 155 fatalities recorded during the same period last year.

The grim figures, released by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), also show that injuries linked to road traffic incidents have surged to 1,433 in the first quarter of 2025 — up from 1,141 a year earlier.

Pedestrian knockdowns have similarly seen an increase, with 156 cases recorded this year compared to 118 within the same period in 2024.

In total, the Ashanti Region recorded 1,108 accident cases in the first three months of the year.

Isaac Oduro, Assistant Planning Manager of the NRSA in the region, told newsmen that human error was responsible for about 90 percent of the crashes.

“These numbers are deeply worrying,” Mr Oduro said. “They point to an urgent need for all road users to take responsibility. Drivers, passengers, motor riders — everyone — must be alert and uphold safety practices.”

He called for intensified public education campaigns and stronger enforcement of road safety regulations, warning that continued negligence could lead to even greater losses.

The Ashanti Region, one of Ghana’s most populous and commercially active areas, has long struggled with road safety issues, particularly in urban centres such as Kumasi.

Authorities have pledged to step up collaboration with transport unions, media, and civil society groups in efforts to reverse the trend.
