A/R: Asonomaso residents urge assembly to halt fuel station project over safety fears

Residents of Asonomaso in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region have appealed to the Municipal Assembly to urgently intervene in an ongoing fuel station project, they say threatens public safety.

The appeal follows the commencement of construction by an unidentified private businessman who is reportedly building the facility in the middle of the township.

Community members fear that allowing the fuel station to operate at its current location could endanger lives and property.

They argue that the project has been sited at the very heart of Asonomaso, raising alarm about the potential consequences in the event of an accident.

According to the residents, the proposed fuel station is surrounded by residential houses, schools and a hospital, making it highly unsuitable for such a facility.

They say the proximity of the project to vulnerable groups such as patients and schoolchildren heightens the risk of fire outbreaks, explosions, and other environmental and safety hazards.

“These are serious dangers we cannot ignore,” one opinion leader said. “A single incident could affect hundreds of innocent people living and working in this area.”

Speaking to the media on Monday, January 19, 2026, the Assembly Member for the Asonomaso East Electoral Area, Hon. I. K. Badu, expressed deep concern about the project and called on the government to come to the aid of the community.

He urged the Municipal Chief Executive of the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly, Hon. Joseph Amankwah, as well as regulatory authorities and traditional leaders, to act swiftly.

“The safety and wellbeing of residents must be prioritised over private business interests,” Hon. Badu said, stressing that the project should not proceed without thorough assessment and community engagement.

Some aggrieved residents and local opinion leaders also criticised what they described as a lack of consultation before construction began.

They appealed to the Government, the MCE, Hon. Joseph Amankwah, and His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene and halt the project.

They warned that permitting the fuel station to operate in such a sensitive location could expose the community to avoidable disasters, putting lives and property at grave risk.

The residents said they remain hopeful that authorities and traditional leadership will respond promptly to their concerns.

They are calling for decisive action to safeguard the community and ensure that development projects adhere to safety regulations and proper planning processes.

“Our appeal is about protecting lives,” a resident noted. “We trust that the right authorities will listen and act in the best interest of Asonomaso.”
