Speaker moves to probe post-Dec. 7 public sector workers’ dismissal

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed the Majority Leader to formally schedule a motion demanding a full parliamentary investigation into the terminations.

The Tuesday directive followed a forceful announcement by the Minority Parliamentary Caucus, which vowed to use every parliamentary tool to challenge the government’s action.

The dispute stems from a directive from the Chief of Staff dated February 11, 2025, which sought to revoke the appointments of public sector workers hired after the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The Speaker’s order to list the motion is expected to set in motion a formal parliamentary process.

But the move to table it is being blocked by the Majority Caucus, which raised a procedural objection.

Their argument centers on the parliamentary sub judice rule, a convention that restricts debate on matters actively before a court to avoid prejudice or interference with the judicial process.
