Kumasi: Court fines six for illegal dumping at Otumfuo Roundabout, one jailed

Six people have been convicted by the Prempeh Assembly District Court in Kumasi for illegally dumping refuse at the Otumfuo Roundabout in Kejetia.
Presiding over the case on May 11, 2026, Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkoh found the accused guilty after they pleaded guilty to the sanitation offence.
The convicts are Atta Gyamfi, 55; Manuna Ishawu, 24; Veronica Maako, 31; Mariama Iddrisu, 64; Kwadwo Amuzu, 37; and Ebenezer Atakorah, 25.
The court imposed a fine of 100 penalty units, equivalent to GHS 1,200.00, on each offender. Those unable to pay were to serve a 10-day jail term.
Five of the offenders have since paid the fine. Ebenezer Atakorah failed to pay and will now serve the 10-day prison sentence.
Speaking to OTEC News, Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Public Relations Officer Henrietta Aboagye confirmed the arrest. She said the offenders were caught around 5:30 a.m. on May 11 while dumping waste illegally at the roundabout.
“We laid an ambush this morning to catch those who always dump refuse at the Otumfuo Roundabout. We arrested six offenders — three women and three men,” she stated.
According to her, the offenders were handed over to prosecutors and arraigned before the Prempeh Assembly District Court Two.
“Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkoh applied the KMA by-laws and fined each person 100 penalty units, which is GHS 1,200, or in default 10 days imprisonment,” she explained.
“Five out of the six were able to pay the amount. One could not pay and will serve 10 days in prison.”
The KMA says it remains committed to ensuring a clean city and will arrest and prosecute sanitation offenders.
